Invasive Plant Management in the North Carolina Sandhills

Wisteria sinensis and Wisteria floribunda -
Chinese and Japanese wisteria

Deciduous twining vines that can spread 30 feet, covering trees and shrubs. Wisterias form thickets that overtake sizeable native trees and shrubs by strangling and shading. They can open the canopy, increasing sunlight, which favors its aggressive growth. Mechanical pulling and cutting should be used for small infestations. The entire plant and future resprouts should be continuously removed. For larger infestations, herbicide application may be necessary. The use of foliar application or cut-stump should be determined on the least disruptive method for the area.
