Invasive Plant Management in the North Carolina Sandhills

Senna obtusifolia - sickle pod
Mostly an annual herbaceous plant, but can survive for two years. Grows anywhere from 1 to 6 feet tall, with a somewhat woody stem at the base. Sicklepod can become a problem for many crops in two or three years. It can reduce yields by competing for light, nutrients, and water. It also invades and dominates pastures. The seed is the only part of the plant eaten by cattle. Cattle can then disperse seeds from one property to another. Control should aim to prevent seed production, by treating infestations before seeds mature. Sicklepod is relatively easy to control in the seedling stage, with control becoming more difficult with increasing age. All observed seedlings should be treated with a spot spray of herbicide.
