Invasive Plant Control in the North Carolina Sandhills

Sapium sebiferum - Chinese tallowtree
Medium sized, deciduous tree, rapidly growing up to 50 feet in height. It invades natural areas, rapidly replacing native species with nearly monospecific stands of Chinese tallowtree. It produces allelopathic tannins that harm nearby species. Its invasive success depends on high rates of seed production, high growth potential, and the performance advantage of seedling herbivory resistance. The key to management is to prevent new infestations by eradicating all individuals before they produce viable seeds. Mechanical removal in the spring with immediate herbicide application is effective. Winter burns followed by mechanical treatment, or another burn the following season is also effective.
