Long Valley Farm - The Nature Conservancy
|
Long Valley Farm is an estate adjacent to Ft. Bragg that was formerly a country get-away for James Stillman Rockefeller and his family. It features many unique attributes such as a large hunting lodge, a man-made lake, extensive woodland and pastureland that is being converted into grassland featuring native species. In recent years The Nature Conservancy aquired the property in order to preserve it. It is currently in the process of being transfered to the ownership of the N.C. Deptartment of Parks and Recreation where it will become a state park.
Wisteria had historically been planted around the hunting lodge and had invaded a buffer zone between the lodge and a stand of longleaf pine. The field team did control work in this area to prevent the infestation from spreading to the adjacent high-quality area. In a separate area of the site, the field team also did work on an infestion of Chinese privet bordering a road next to the lake outflow stream. It may have originally been planted there to control erosion.
