Invasive Plant Management in the North Carolina Sandhills

Lespedeza bicolor - shrubby lepedeza, shrubby bushclover
Bicolor lespedeza was introduced primarily to provide legume food and cover to popular game animals. However, it's tendancy to spread into both open and forested, especiallly after fire, has made it a problematic invasive.  It can prevent forest and native plant regeneration by forming dense stands.  It is a shrub that can grow up to 10 ft and can have multiple branches with deciduious alternate leaves featuring 3 elliptical leaflets. Pinkish to purple flowers bloom in late summer and seed pods are present August to March.
