Invasive Plant Management in the North Carolina Sandhills

Ailanthus altissima - tree-of-heaven
Found primarily in disturbed areas. Due to its prolific seed production and rapid growth it out-competes native vegetation. Also, it produces a toxin that restricts the growth of native vegetation. Pulling before the seedling's taproot has been developed most easily controls Ailanthus. This means that early detection is vital. Once established, the most effective method is cutting late in the growing season and then applying herbicide to the cut stem. If the patch is too large to manage by cutting, it may be more feasible to broadcast herbicide in late summer or early autumn. The area will need to be monitored for several years and re-sprouting of new plants controlled.
